Menopause Symptoms | Understanding Menopause
As women age they will naturally begin to experience menopause symptoms. Menopause is defined as 12 months after a woman has had her last period. The transition into actual menopause includes the most commonly known symptoms such as hot flashes, weight gain, and irregular periods. Each woman is uniquely affected and will experience varying levels of many symptoms. Read on to learn more about menopause symptoms and discover tips to entering this change of life safely and with ease.
The 3 Stages of Menopause
There are 3 stages of menopause that occur. During each phase a woman will uniquely experience varying symptoms. The symptoms of all 3 phases of menopause are generally the same.
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the time leading up to actual menopause. This period of time can last anywhere from 7 – 15 years. Hormones will start to decline, menstrual cycles become irregular, and you may experience hot flashes or vaginal dryness. Women in their mid-40s typically begin perimenopause. Few women skip perimenopause entirely and entire menopause suddenly.
Menopause
Menopause is defined as the lack of menstruation for 12 whole months. Studies show that 1 in 10 women will experience menopausal symptoms for 12 years following the end of their last period.
Post menopause
Once 12 consecutive months have passed from your last period, you enter into post menopause for the rest of your life. Hormone levels will remain low, and you’ll no longer have a monthly period. Additionally, you won’t be able to get pregnant naturally, as the ovaries stop releasing eggs.
