Mirena IUD: Long-Lasting Pregnancy Prevention & Menstrual Support
Birth control is a form of pregnancy prevention that has been around for decades. For many women, condoms and pills are not always the best solution to avoid pregnancy or improve menstruation. The IUD is even more effective as a birth control method than taking pills and is an ideal option for women who wish to avoid daily pills or shots. The Mirena IUD, or progesterone-releasing IUD, is inserted by a gynecologist into the uterus so that once in place, it can control the uterus lining, thinning it so it is not favorable for pregnancy.
The Women’s Health in New England is proud to offer the Mirena IUD, among other methods of birth control and menstrual support. Contact us by calling (508) 047-0800 to schedule a consultation where one of our expert Gynecologists, Dr. Julia Edelman, MD, FACOG, MSCP or Dr. Aasia Romano, MD, FACOG, MSCP, will conduct a thorough medical history and physical examination to help determine if the IUD is right for you, or if not, help you find a treatment best suited for your body, health, and family planning.
What is an IUD?
Across the globe, IUDs are the most widely used reversible contraceptives due to their effectiveness, convenience, and safety. These small, T-shaped plastic devices are placed in the uterus and provide pregnancy prevention for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type. An IUD can be inserted at any point in the menstrual cycle, though the risk of expulsion is higher when placed during menstruation. They are also suitable for young women who have not given birth. Fertility typically returns quickly after the removal of an IUD.
It is important to note that while IUDs are an effective form of birth control, IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Why the Mirena IUD is The Best Choice
Benefits of a Mirena IUD
- Highly effective: Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for five years or more.
- Reversible: Can be removed at any time by a doctor.
- Long-lasting: Protects for up to five years.
- Emergency contraception: Can be used as emergency contraception if inserted within five days of unprotected sex.
- Reduces heavy periods: Helps decrease menstrual blood loss and pain.
- Lowers pelvic infection risk: Can reduce the risk of pelvic infections.
- May prevent endometrial cancer: Lowers the risk of endometrial cancer.
- Eases endometriosis pain: Helps reduce pain caused by endometriosis.
Mirena IUDs Alleviate Abnormal or Heavy Bleeding
One of the most notable benefits of this progesterone-secreting IUD is that it is also an effective way to help control abnormal menstrual patterns, such as heavy or prolonged bleeding. While you may be aware that heavy, prolonged, or too-frequent menstrual periods can make you anemic and feel tired, you may not be aware that skipping menstrual periods also has risks. Women of all ages who are athletes have extra adipose tissue or who have PCOS may often skip menstrual periods.
The progesterone-releasing IUD is helpful for women of all ages and perimenopausal women who may be skipping menstrual periods. A woman who is still menstruating and skips 90 consecutive days without bleeding will build up uterus lining that they cannot shed. This process may result in thick lining or even pre-cancerous or cancer changes. Nonhormonal IUDs, only progesterone-releasing IUDs, do not protect from this thick lining buildup.
It is important to know that the progesterone-secreting IUD is not designed to put hormones in your bloodstream. The progesterone hormone is not designed to leave the uterus lining, and most women do not experience side effects from its use. It does not cause breast cancer or migraine headaches, or increases in blood pressure and is medically safe for most women.
What to Expect During IUD Insertion & Removal
Our expert doctors insert an IUD during a quick appointment at our private medical office. While the procedure takes only a few minutes, we offer four different strategies to make the IUD insertion experience more comfortable. We prescribe a medication to take by mouth the day prior to the insertion so that the cervix is softer.
We also offer an injection of Toradol before the IUD insertion if the individual prefers that to Ibuprofen. Toradol is a much stronger version of Ibuprofen and helps prevent cramps and discomfort. If you feel anxious about the IUD insertion, we offer a prescription for Diazepam to take before the IUD insertion. We require you to have a ride to and from the office that day and ask that you not drive for 24 hours if you take the Diazepam. We also number the cervix prior to inserting the IUD. Once inserted, the T-shaped IUD remains in the uterus, with two small strings extending outside the cervix for future removal. Your partner is typically not able to feel these strings during intimate activity.
A follow-up appointment is scheduled to ensure the IUD is appropriately placed. The device will be removed when it expires, if a medical concern arises, or if you decide to become pregnant. Removal is a quick and simple in-office procedure with minimal discomfort.
